When A Family Dog Attacks
"Tyrese come walk the dog" I have heard that a lot in the last seven years. My mama always says tells me that when our house dog "Bones" wants to go outside. He is a tiger striped pit bull. He looks very mean but is actually the most friendly and playful dog we have. Before I walk him, I go outside and make sure "King" and "Queen" are tied up. King is a red nose pit bull and is also Bones son. Queen is a all black pit bull. Yes we have 3 pit bulls. Is it a handful? Yes but we love our dogs. If King or Queen are lose I tell my brother "Tyrele" to tie them up. He takes care of them and I take care of Bones.
It is a Wednesday. Like any other typical school night we get our school clothes ready for tomorrow. I iron my school clothes and pack my basketball bag because I have a game tomorrow. Tyrele does his homework and iron his clothes. My mama comes behind us and make sure we have and did everything. Before we go to bed, I walk and feed Bones. Tyrele feeds King and Queen and make sure they are tied up. We go to sleep like usual, not knowing we will have a life changing experience in the morning.
“TYRESE ! TYRELE!” My mother screamed. I had never heard her scream so loud. Not even when me and my brother put a hole in the wall. Before I even realized it I’m running down the hallway. I reacted so fast. Me and my brother run into each other from trying to get our mother’s room so fast. From my room to her’s it bout a ten second walk. In that ten second walk I thought of a hundred bad things could be happen from her having a heart attack to being robbed. We bust into her room we do not see her. Now I’m really thinking bad. She screams again and then we hear dogs growling. We realize she is outside. We run to the front door and see Bones and King fighting.
My mama wanted to me sleep as long as I can because I had a game today. So instead of waking me up to walk Bones, she decided to do it herself. She had forgot to look outside to make sure the other dogs are tied up. I do that to avoid situations like this. Bones and King have always play fought before but it never got to serious. So when we seen them actually fighting we were shocked. My brother and I paused for a second. When we finally snapped back to the reality, we knew we had to stop them soon before they hurt each other or our mother. We have experienced a dog fight before. A dog in neighborhood got loose and attacked King. So we kind of knew what we were doing.
“Bones stop!” I yelled as we ran down the steps. Tyrele tells our mother to let Bones leash go and get back. Bones was latched on King neck and wasn’t letting ago. To break fighting dogs apart, you need to stick something in the dog biting mouths and wrench it open. So I ran back in the house to get a large spoon with a handle. I got it and told Tyrele to grab King while I grab Bones. I stuck the spoon in his mouth and he didn’t let go at first but when I started moving it around he did. In my head I’m thinking “I’m glad this over”. Somehow Bones got away from me and tried to go back at King. He runs around me. My mother is behind me she tries to grab him and she does. She grabs his front legs. The speed at which he is running and the force she grabbed him with, spun Bones around. His adrenaline is still high so, he thinks King is biting him. He charges in the direction of my mother. He doesn’t know it is her and bites her inner thigh. She screams and he shakes on her leg. Bones is a well trained dog. He does everything we say when we say it. We had him since he was puppy, so the last thing he would do is hurt one of us. Before I can run over there to stop him, My mother yells “Bones, it’s me” he looks up and stop.
My and my brother put up the dogs. We run back to check on our mother and blood is just gushing out her leg. I take my shirt off and tie it on her leg to stop the blood. We carried her in the house leaving a trail of blood behind us. We called a ambulance and tried stop the bleeding as much as we could but it would not stop. She was losing a lot blood which caused her to drift in and out of consciences. I thought she was gone bleed out and die. The ambulance finally came and so did the police. They took her to the emergency room while the police question us to see what happen. We told them what happened and they wanted to know which dog actually bit her. We told them and they said that Bones had to go with them. My brother went with them and Bones while I went with my mother.
In the emergency room I just kept thinking the worse. My mother was gone die or wasn’t gone be able to walk and they were gone put Bones down. All on top of that I still had school and a region basketball game to get ready for. I called Tyrele to see what would happen with Bones. He said they tested him for Rabies and if he had it, they would put him down. He didn’t have it and that was some good news. Eventually they let me in the back to my mama. She had just got stitched up but she was acting weird because the gave her something for the pain. She told me she was fine and that she wanted me to go home and get ready for school and the game. I didn’t want to leave her side but he knew I had to. She told me she loved and that she would try to come to the game if she could. I told her not to. I played that game for her and it was one of my best high school games ever.
Till this day we still have Bones, King, and Queen. We actually added to more to the family “Polo” and “Fat Mama”. They are the off spring of King and Queen. We realized that pit bulls are really dangerous and they have to be taking care of with caution. My mother still deals with all the dogs till this day. Usually that will shy a person away from dogs but not her. To me she is such a brave person. To have an experience like that and it not change her point a view on dogs, show that she is an amazing and forgiving person. From then on Me and Brother always walked Bones unless she just had to. I was scary experience that I think brought I family together a little closer. It shows how much dogs can be considered family because soon as my mother came home she asked for Bones and rubbed him like she usually does. I think if they would put Bones down, it would've made our family incomplete. My mother always said Bones is her third son. This experience just showed how much we really love our dogs.
